Teacher Retention and Attrition Key Terms and Data Calculations
The Teacher Retention and Attrition Dashboard helps school systems analyze teacher retention and turnover patterns. By reviewing this data, school systems can identify retention trends by grade level and subject area, address staffing gaps, and plan for future recruitment needs.
Key Terms
Teacher
An individual with a Role ID of '087' (Teacher) in at least one PEIMS record in the year of interest
First Year Teacher
Individuals in their first year as a teacher of record in any Texas LEA (no previous data as a teacher of record from 1993-1994 to present).
Re-Enterer
Newly hired teachers who were previously employed as a teacher of record in any Texas LEA at some point from 1993-1994 to present, and who were not employed as a teacher of record in the year immediately preceding the hire year. This category counts both individuals who change roles within the public school system and those that leave the system entirely.
The ‘Years of Teaching Experience’ Filter
Based on years of teaching experience in a public Texas LEA, not years of professional experience. This is a distinction from what is used in TAPR reports.
The ‘Teaching Subject’ Filter
Based on Service ID rolled up into more general categories using a crosswalk.
Data Calculations
Data Time Span
When dashboard data are refreshed annually, new years of data will be added up to ten years. Once ten years of data is reached, the oldest year will be cycled out. The ‘Teacher Retention and Attrition Through Time’ page will show data for the selected year and the four prior years.
